The Sawyer Seminar is proud to host a joint event featuring Dr. Ana Lucia Araujo, Professor of History at Howard University.

There will be a graduate student workshop and a book talk on Dr. Araujo's latest publication, The Gift: How Objects of Prestige Shaped the Atlantic Slave Trade and Colonialism.

Location: Grand Hall at the Gayle Karch Cook Center at Maxwell Hall

Dr. Araujo will present on her latest publication The Gift: How Objects of Prestige Shaped the Atlantic Slave Trade and Colonialism (Cambridge University Press, 2023). Q&A to follow. Using objects of prestige as a framework, the book traces gifts, objects of exchange, and cultural artifacts, to better understand the material culture of the Atlantic slave trade and colonialism in West and West Central Africa in the eighteenth and the ninteenth centuries. All are encouraged to attend. Q&A to follow.

 

GRADUATE STUDENT WORKSHOP

Date and Time: Wedneday, April 10th, 2024, 11:00AM-12:30PM 

Location: Ballantine Hall 503

Dr. Araujo will take student questions and discuss interdisciplinary methodologies for research and writing, especially as they pertain to the materialities of the past and objects of prestige. A catered lunch will be provided.
